Cult films are films that have developed a cult following. Most of them are not widely know or are very successful but they have a very devoted fan base. Cult film fans are known for quoting their favorite movie and having multiple viewing of their favorite cult movie. Cult films can vary from innocent anime movies like My Neighbor Totoro, to gruesome films like Cannibal Holocaust. One of the things that make cult films well loved among their fans is the violence. For example, Chan-wook Park's movie Oldboy is a cult favorite and one of the most famous scenes from the movie is the hallway fight scene where the lead character fights about 20 to 25 guys using a hammer and his bare hands.
Other violent cult films are known for their over the top violence, like the movie Kill Bill Vol. 1. One of the best scenes from this Quentin Tarantino classic is the scene where "The Bride" fights the Japanese gang "The Crazy 88s". The scene contains heads/limbs getting chopped off, blood shooting out of a person's body, and eyes being gouged out of people's heads.
A recent cult movie that is also very violent is Seven Psychopaths. Within the first ten minutes we see a guy with a ski mask shoot two mafia guys in the head. Later Woody Harrelson's character shoots an old lady because he discovers that she is married to the guy who stole his dog.
There are many other films that have memorable violent scenes. In David Fincher's Fight Club, the Narrator fights another guy leaving him on the floor with a bloody, disfigured face. In the 2011 cult classic, Drive, Ryan Gosling's character steps on a man's head at the end of their elevator fight. In the comedy Hot Fuzz, a pillar falls on a guys head and his head explodes. Not all cult movies contain violence but the ones that do have memorable scenes that the fans love and makes them want to watch it over and over. Violence will always be a key element in the making of a cult movie.
